Question -

What did the Peddler say in his defence when it was clear that he was not the person the ironmaster had thought he was?

Answer -

The Peddler made no further efforts to deceive the ironmaster. He said that it was not his fault, as he had never pretended that he was the ironmasterтАЩs friend. He had only begged to be allowed to stay on at the mill for the night. He had even declined the ironmasterтАЩs repeated invitation. He further said that he was ready to put on his rags again and go away.
