Question -

Ten years later, A will be twice as old as B and five years ago, A was three times as old as B. What are the present ages of A and B ? (C.B.S.E. 1992)

Answer -

Let present age of A = x years
and age of B = y years
10 years later
AтАЩs age will be = x + 10
and BтАЩs age will be = y + 10
x + 10 = 2(y + 10)
=> x + 10 = 2y + 20
=> x тАУ 2y = 20 тАУ 10
=> x тАУ 2y = 10 тАж.(i)
5 years ago,
AтАЩs age was = x тАУ 5 years
and BтАЩs age was = y тАУ 5 years
x тАУ 5 = 3 (y тАУ 5)
=> x тАУ 5 = 3y тАУ 15
=> x тАУ 3y = 5 тАУ 15 = -10 тАж.(ii)
Subtracting (ii) from (i) we get
y = 20
and x тАУ 2 x 20 = 10
=> x = 40 + 10 = 50
AтАЩs present age = 50 years
and BтАЩs present age = 20 years
